Not only needed to connect and transport people as the city was founded and developed, the expansion of the railroad has also been integral to Houston growing into the international port city that it is now. The practice of train tagging, which began in its earliest days with railroad workers themselves, has gone from a subversive underground alternative art-movement to a brilliant overland display of creative energy which moves from one urban metropolis to the next.

INSIDER TIP

First Ward resident and multi-instrumentalist Blues man Texas Johnny Boy takes daily inspiration from the railroad tracks that border his home studio. The train influence is easy to hear in the “freight train rhythm” of his sets with Milton Hopkins, grandson of local music legend Lightnin’ Hopkins.
